Fanfic and re-mixing

Note: To any authors who would care enough to be bothered to remix my fanfic or write sequels or anything like that. Please, let me know about it. 

Even if I disliked your work or your take on my take of someone else’s world, I’d probably still be interested to see what you came up with. In fact, I’d probably want to link to your work from my site (although I’ll reserve the right to make snarky comments along with the link if I don’t agree with your vision of my vision. *wink*).

I also reserve the right not to like your re-mix/sequel. I reserve the right to hate it with a passion and bitch about it endlessly. I reserve the right to get all wanky and emo (and any other buzzwords of the moment) about anything that might be interpreted as critcism or mockery of my obviously perfect and glorious vision. *wink*

But I’ll probably still give you my hearty approval for writing it. Why? Because I’m a contrary bitch who likes the pain? Well, yeah. But also because I genuinely believe that stories grow and last by re-telling and “re-mixing” (stupid buzzword). It’s what I do to other peoples stories and therefore I have no right to place different rules on anything that I write.

All I ask is do for me what I do for other writers. Credit me for my contribution to the ongoing story.  Don’t outright plaguarize me. And do for me what I can’t do for them because of the legal barrier that must – by their necessity – seperate us. Let me know about it, not because of the “permission” thing but because I want to know if people care enough – for good or bad – to interact with my ideas.

Asking me for my permission (whether for re-mixing or even just for archiving a story) isn’t really about permission at all. It’s about communicating with me and letting me know that you read it and it made you feel something. And I like that. 🙂
