    The James Marsters Queue Game

    5th June 2009 / No Comments

In May 2009 James Marsters came to London to do a series of gigs and convention appearances. We queued… a lot. The Queue Game was devised by me as bit of silliness to allow us fans to spend some time together out on the town. The goal was to start a James queue at a variety of London landmarks. A prize was then to be awarded to the best queuers at the final gig of the tour, at the 100 Club. It turns out that James’ fans also quite like blokes in uniform! This photo was the winner… And the rest…

    Give Me Money

    7th October 2008 / No Comments

I’ve been active in online fandoms for a frighteningly long time and it’s occurred to me that other people seem to be making a good living by fleecing their friends with barely credible scams and sob stories. Thought it was long past time that I gave it a try. 🙂 My sob story in bullet points… All my sock puppets have been attacked by the – previously thought only to be legendary – gull winged cyber moths and need darning by professional virgins in the mountains of Tibet. My flesh eating plants have eaten my cats My great aunt Ephemera needs money to finance her gambling addiction or she’ll have…

Fandom is hilarious. You know how you asked why I go read things that make me cranky? It’s because, at times like these, I regard fandom as an elaborate piece of performance art created entirely for my amusement. Also, masochism. lizbee, in ‘Moffat’s Doctor’

How the Internet ruined the Doctor Who series 4 finale for it’s own biggest fans

    16th July 2008 / No Comments

This pretty much applies to any fandom, it’s just Who that’s brought it into sharp focus. For weeks and months leading up the finale, on fan sites up and down the land (and overseas) fans were watching and speculating and thinking, thinking, thinking. Puts “clues” together and forcing pieces to fit into patterns. We (yep, I’m definitely one of them) were thousands strong and one person’s dumb theory gave a gem of an idea to someone else, and that person’s theory may have been dumb too but they passed on a little more to someone else. Thousands of us, plotting and coming up with fantastical ideas that required no budget,…

Death for Who? Journey’s End Thoughts about Donna

    15th July 2008 / No Comments

I’m coming to believe that how you feel about the Doctor wiping Donna’s memories can be compared with how you feel about switching off a coma victim’s life support. (Except that the coma victim doesn’t normally beg you not to do it – unless they’re Sam Tyler, when they spend two whole series being emo about it [deliberate Life on Mars reference *wink*]. It’s the begging that makes this 100 times worse. If only she’d suggested it and forced HIM to do it, or even just had it presented as more of a choice and agreed to it.) It’s about quality of life. It’s about whether you think that life…

    Everyone’s getting it wrong

    20th May 2008 / No Comments

Doctor Who isn’t really off for two weeks for Eurovision. They’re just really really crafty and this is the long waited for Doctor Who Eurovision episode set in the year 3000, where Stephen Moffat will finally reveal to us the deep dark secret of why Terry Wogan (still presenting it) cannot escape its sinister clutches!! Captain Jack and Captain John will find themselves transmated into this episode to sing “I Lost My Heart to A Starship Trooper”.  Donna will sing “I will Survive”; she will be fabulous and we’ll all love her utterly… then she’ll slip off the stage and die a really pointless “Joss Whedon”-esque death that’s meant to…

    Never Been Jossed

    27th November 2006 / No Comments

The term “Jossed” (jossed, jossing, joss) was named for Joss Whedon, creator of the popular television shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. The term is generally used by fan fiction writers when these shows chose to go in a direction that contradicted the story the fanfiction writer was currently working on. For instance, someone writing fanfiction on how to bring back a character from the dead might be jossed when the actual event happened, in a different way, in seatson six. Wikipedia I love the term “Jossed”, but personally, I find it largely redundant. I’ve always accepted that most of my fanfic will be AU from the moment…
