    Eurovision Fashion Trends 2017

    14th May 2017 / No Comments

Well, for all the stuff about winners wearing white, it turned out not to be a popular colour. Black was the most favoured (16 acts), with white trailing at 6 acts. Grey was the next favoured, with red also chosen by a couple. See through skirts and full leg slits, whilst popular in the semis, didn’t make it to the final. Just three of each of those. Pinterest worthy hairstyles also faired badly in the semis, with just three in the final. Faking it with instruments remains popular. 7 acts did that. Not many weird ethnic instruments this time though. Faux animals(!), leather jackets, masks, sleeves that become gloves and…

    A Weirdness of Spikes

    21st March 2013 / No Comments

This is a tale of three Spikes. One is a cartoon dog. The next is Spike on Buffy, played by James Marsters. The last is Spike on Press Gang. Both those last two are characters for whom Spike is a nickname. Spike on Press Gang takes his nickname from the cartoon dog. The characters real name is James. Dexter Fletcher, who plays him, is English but his Spike is American. James Marsters is American, but his Spike is English. That Spike’s real name is William. The cartoon dog was created by a guy named William.

Equality And Privilege In Four (And A Bit) Really Simple Graphs

    20th June 2012 / No Comments

Please excuse the crudity of this model, I didn’t have time to build it to scale or to paint it. (points if you get that reference *wink*) This is my explanation of how the process of achieving equality is believed to work and how it actually should work. I’ve labeled the graphs with men and women, but it can also be applied to religion, sexual orientation, etc. anyplace there’s a dominant group and an other or others. We start with a graph of what a lot of people probably think the current situation is: In this belief, the place men are at is what we’re aiming for, and women are…

What’s the difference between Xander’s AR and Spike’s AR?

    20th May 2009 / No Comments

In my opinion, the difference isn’t in the act of committing the AR or who’s more to blame for their actions in starting out doing it, it’s all in the act of stopping and what you do afterwards. Xander stopped because the possession was broken. Spike stopped because he realised what he was doing was wrong. Xander used the possession as a reason to never have to talk about it again or accept that he might have been responsible in any way for it. Spike went out and put in what he felt to be a needed barrier so that it wouldn’t happen again. Both scenes show the argument that…

Buffy’s Message of Failure and Redemption

    22nd November 2008 / No Comments

I still fail to see how a story where a guy who has literally been presented as more animal than man (vampire), manages to stop himself from raping a girl (even when she’s sent him the biggest slew of mixed messages ever) and then gets pushed to brink of insanity with remorse and finally manages to make peace with her and himself before saving the whole fucking world by sacrificing himself is an offensive storyline! Especially when it’s also paired alongside the story of woman who’s driven to a nervous breakdown by years of hardship and horror, who treats him like an animal for her own ends, but ultimately realises…

10 Reasons why Captain John Hart is NOT like Spike

    18th January 2008 / No Comments

    1. Spike was not about the sex, he was about the love (sex/passion was just a natural part of that). He didn’t think about the shagability of everyone around him, he fixated – to an often unhealthy degree – on the one he loved. 2. Spike was a hot-blooded killer, not a cold-blooded one. 3. Spike prefered fists and fangs as his style, not weapons, tricks and gadgets. 4. Hart’s plan was too well thought out and well executed, Spike would have gotten bored and blown it. 5. Spike was basically honest (even in his badness, even in The Yoko Factor), he was not a good liar or manipulator when…

    The Heavens opened…

    1st April 2000 / No Comments

The passengers stood crowded, as ever, into little bunches on the freezing cold train platform. Beyond the frail shelter of the Victorian awnings the snow fell in a wispy blanket only to congregate into inches of accumulation on the iced over ground. The train was late due to the train company’s total inability to cope in the face of anything that could be classed as ‘weather’… the wrong kind of snow, wind above a gust, falling leaves in Autumn. Today, it was snowing. It was April. It was APRIL!!!! Suddenly there was a rumble in the Heavens and the weary commuters groaned in anticipation of even worse weather. Each silently…
