May the Fourth Be With You

    4th May 2017 / No Comments

Star Wars, Carrie Fisher and the subject of mental health are all subjects close to my heart, so obviously I had to join in with this. #glitterforcarrie

    Steven Moffat Love/Hate

    3rd June 2014 / No Comments

You are left alone in Steven Moffat’s office for 5 minutes. What do you do?  Install a program on his computer that randomly pops up messages saying things like “catch phrases and items of clothing are fun but are not character development”, “write people, not just plot lines” and “show, don’t tell”.

    The Exterminator (Dalek Fascinator)

    12th October 2012 / No Comments

So, as you do, I fancied dressing as a Dalek at a con. One day, when we have enough space, I’d love to build my own full size Dalek but, for now, a flouncy dress with a corset and crinoline seemed like a more sensible idea. But what to do about representing the head? I’d seen a few others online do similar Dalek outfits and  most seemed to involve fitting the dome lights to a  hairband. I liked that idea, and it looks great, but I wanted to do something a bit more… so The Exterminator was born! I made a version 1 trying to shape cardboard into the right…

Female Role Models: Pop Verses Geek

    16th June 2012 / No Comments

An astonishing number of my friends on Facebook have shared this image (I tried to find who to credit it to, but only managed to get back to George Takei and that had no further credit). Or maybe this is not so surprising; a lot of my friends are sci fi fans and women. On first view it has a strongly feminist message, but this image is fascinating because it has so many more layers than that (and some are not that great). My first thought was a little puzzlement. All of these women – all of them, like them or not –  are actually fantastic, for a variety of…

    11th Doctor Corset

    10th June 2012 / No Comments

I liked the subtle pattern on the Eleventh Doctor’s early shirt – all those tiny burgundy swirls – so when someone posted a Spoonflower link to be able to get the fabric on the DWCosplay community on LJ I knew I wanted to do something with it. However I can’t sew and shirts look terrible on me anyway. So I came up with the idea of making a corset. Well, not actually making a corset, but covering an existing corset with the fabric. Stuff used: Cheap but real corset (I got a white under-bust one from Corsets Boulevard on eBay for £30.) 1 yard of fabric 2 metres of thin…

What’s the difference between Xander’s AR and Spike’s AR?

    20th May 2009 / No Comments

In my opinion, the difference isn’t in the act of committing the AR or who’s more to blame for their actions in starting out doing it, it’s all in the act of stopping and what you do afterwards. Xander stopped because the possession was broken. Spike stopped because he realised what he was doing was wrong. Xander used the possession as a reason to never have to talk about it again or accept that he might have been responsible in any way for it. Spike went out and put in what he felt to be a needed barrier so that it wouldn’t happen again. Both scenes show the argument that…

Buffy’s Message of Failure and Redemption

    22nd November 2008 / No Comments

I still fail to see how a story where a guy who has literally been presented as more animal than man (vampire), manages to stop himself from raping a girl (even when she’s sent him the biggest slew of mixed messages ever) and then gets pushed to brink of insanity with remorse and finally manages to make peace with her and himself before saving the whole fucking world by sacrificing himself is an offensive storyline! Especially when it’s also paired alongside the story of woman who’s driven to a nervous breakdown by years of hardship and horror, who treats him like an animal for her own ends, but ultimately realises…

10 Reasons why Captain John Hart is NOT like Spike

    18th January 2008 / No Comments

    1. Spike was not about the sex, he was about the love (sex/passion was just a natural part of that). He didn’t think about the shagability of everyone around him, he fixated – to an often unhealthy degree – on the one he loved. 2. Spike was a hot-blooded killer, not a cold-blooded one. 3. Spike prefered fists and fangs as his style, not weapons, tricks and gadgets. 4. Hart’s plan was too well thought out and well executed, Spike would have gotten bored and blown it. 5. Spike was basically honest (even in his badness, even in The Yoko Factor), he was not a good liar or manipulator when…
