Guide To Avoiding Harassment Charges In The Workplace

    28th February 2013 / No Comments

Apparently some people are having trouble discerning what is and isn’t harassment in the workplace and are concerned that “politcal correctness gone mad” means that no one will ever be able to fancy and ask out anyone in the workplace ever again. Here’s a helpful guide for if you find yourself in this position. Scenario 1: Co-worker approaches fellow co-worker in the kitchen/break room “Hi, do you fancy going out for a drink sometime?” “Yeah, that’d be nice.” They go out for a drink sometime. They eventually end up living together or married. Conclusion: Not harassment Scenario 2: Co-worker approaches fellow co-worker in the kitchen/break room “Hi, do you fancy…

    Pride

    8th November 2012 / No Comments

Update: I managed to lose the original image for this post when I moved domains. The original image had a poppy instead of an image of a veteran and was very much saying that this story is a reason to proudly wear a poppy. This image tells the same story. Even without the poppy it’s still a shit story and, I believe, that my point still holds. Woohoo, yeah! Old guys being patronisingly shitty to the French is totally the reason to wear your poppy with pride! Go racism! </sarcasm> This meme is both offensive to our veterans – by making them sound ignorantly racist – and fucking stupid in equating…

    The Exterminator (Dalek Fascinator)

    12th October 2012 / No Comments

So, as you do, I fancied dressing as a Dalek at a con. One day, when we have enough space, I’d love to build my own full size Dalek but, for now, a flouncy dress with a corset and crinoline seemed like a more sensible idea. But what to do about representing the head? I’d seen a few others online do similar Dalek outfits and  most seemed to involve fitting the dome lights to a  hairband. I liked that idea, and it looks great, but I wanted to do something a bit more… so The Exterminator was born! I made a version 1 trying to shape cardboard into the right…

My response to this meme. Edward: I will stalk you, manipulate you, physically abuse you, treat you like an incompetent child and contemplate killing you regularly. Bella: That’s okay. I will just internalise your abuse as my fault and sink into a terrible depression at how terrible my life is, even though lots of people like me and my life’s not that much of a stress at all… apart from the self induced drama over you. Angel:  I will stalk you, manipulate you, physically abuse you, treat you like an incompetent child, attempt to kill you, kill and torture your friends, cause you incredible angst over our ongoing relationship and…

Equality And Privilege In Four (And A Bit) Really Simple Graphs

    20th June 2012 / No Comments

Please excuse the crudity of this model, I didn’t have time to build it to scale or to paint it. (points if you get that reference *wink*) This is my explanation of how the process of achieving equality is believed to work and how it actually should work. I’ve labeled the graphs with men and women, but it can also be applied to religion, sexual orientation, etc. anyplace there’s a dominant group and an other or others. We start with a graph of what a lot of people probably think the current situation is: In this belief, the place men are at is what we’re aiming for, and women are…

Female Role Models: Pop Verses Geek

    16th June 2012 / No Comments

An astonishing number of my friends on Facebook have shared this image (I tried to find who to credit it to, but only managed to get back to George Takei and that had no further credit). Or maybe this is not so surprising; a lot of my friends are sci fi fans and women. On first view it has a strongly feminist message, but this image is fascinating because it has so many more layers than that (and some are not that great). My first thought was a little puzzlement. All of these women – all of them, like them or not –  are actually fantastic, for a variety of…

    11th Doctor Corset

    10th June 2012 / No Comments

I liked the subtle pattern on the Eleventh Doctor’s early shirt – all those tiny burgundy swirls – so when someone posted a Spoonflower link to be able to get the fabric on the DWCosplay community on LJ I knew I wanted to do something with it. However I can’t sew and shirts look terrible on me anyway. So I came up with the idea of making a corset. Well, not actually making a corset, but covering an existing corset with the fabric. Stuff used: Cheap but real corset (I got a white under-bust one from Corsets Boulevard on eBay for £30.) 1 yard of fabric 2 metres of thin…

    The James Marsters Queue Game

    5th June 2009 / No Comments

In May 2009 James Marsters came to London to do a series of gigs and convention appearances. We queued… a lot. The Queue Game was devised by me as bit of silliness to allow us fans to spend some time together out on the town. The goal was to start a James queue at a variety of London landmarks. A prize was then to be awarded to the best queuers at the final gig of the tour, at the 100 Club. It turns out that James’ fans also quite like blokes in uniform! This photo was the winner… And the rest…

What’s the difference between Xander’s AR and Spike’s AR?

    20th May 2009 / No Comments

In my opinion, the difference isn’t in the act of committing the AR or who’s more to blame for their actions in starting out doing it, it’s all in the act of stopping and what you do afterwards. Xander stopped because the possession was broken. Spike stopped because he realised what he was doing was wrong. Xander used the possession as a reason to never have to talk about it again or accept that he might have been responsible in any way for it. Spike went out and put in what he felt to be a needed barrier so that it wouldn’t happen again. Both scenes show the argument that…
